Albania & Greece

About

Get in to the heart of old world culture as you travel from Croatia to Greece. Visit ancient ruins, cliff top monasteries, stunning beaches and communist relics on your road trip through Croatia, Albania and Greece.

You should experience it because...

Of all the former communist capitals of Eastern Europe, Tirana feels most like a step in to a time machine. It is still living its history, and walk through the old communist housing blocks gives you an idea of what life used to be like.

Ancient culture

Berat is a Unesco-protected village and features a distinctly Ottoman-Turkish flavour of the east in the heart of Albania.

Hike up the iconic Acropolis in Athens, see the changing of the guard in Symtagma Square, and watch a film in one of Athens’ famous open-air cinemas.

Admire Tirana’s grand boulevards that are lined with fascinating relics of its Ottoman, Italian and communist past.

  • 1&2 Tirana – sightseeing and attractions – cafés & nightlife Discover Albania's compact capital strolling through the city. Absorb Turkish and Italian influences in the city of Tirana and head to the Et'hem Bey Mosque to admire intricate frescoes. Perhaps get adventurous on a rafting or hiking excursion, or take a more relaxed approach with an afternoon sojourn through the National History Museum. It’s the largest museum in Albania and holds most of the country’s archaeological treasures and a replica ofSkanderbeg’s massive sword. Climb to the top of Rr. Elbasanit – the views over thecity and surrounding mountains are excellent. Visit the Martyr’s Cemetery while you are here where some 900 partisans who died in WWII are buried. Skanderbeg Square is the best place to start witnessing Tirana’s daily life. And behind the National Art Gallery you will pass the 6m high walls of the Fortress of Justinian, the last remnants of a Byzantine-era castle.
  • 3 Durres and Kruja A short bus journey or drive from Tirana takes you to Durres – once Albania’s capital. The Amphitheatre at Durres is one of the largest in the Balkans and has an estimated seating capacity of 20,000. The public baths close-by date from the 2nd century AC and you can see the remains of an acqueduct about 15km long that was built during the reign of Roman Emperor Hadrian. Kruja is not far from Tirana. It was here that Skanderbeg – Albania’s hero (his forces defended Kruja from the Ottomans) - was born. Kruja’s houses appear to sit in the lap of a mountain, and an ancient castle juts out to one side with the massive Skanderbeg Museum jutting out of the castle itself. Visit the museum to see exhibits of Skanderbeg’s struggle against the Ottomans.
  • 4&5 Berat, Albania Travel to Berat, one of the oldest cities in the country and better known to Albanians as the 'City of a Thousand Windows'. Discover an incredible concentration of historical buildings, including a crumbling castle and fortress.
  • 6&7 Gjirokastra, Albania Step back in time in Gjirokastra, a perfectly preserved Ottoman town. Get a glimpse of the region's tumultuous past on a visit to the magnificent citadel and be sure to amble through the 17th-century bazaar.
  • 8-10 Corfu - sightseeing and attractions Descend upon the world-renowned islands of Greece. Corfu offers a World Heritage-listed Old Town and miles of scenic coastline. Stroll along the elegant Liston and delve into the myths of ancient Greece with atrip to the Archaeological Museum.
  • 10-12 Athens – sightseeing and attractions To experience Athens is to fully understand the essence of Greece: ancient monuments surviving in a sea of cement, startling beauty amid day-to-day life, and tradition sitting close by with modern. Get a feel for the city and walk around the ancient Acropolis and the Parthenon and the centre of Athens around the Plaka district with its charming atmosphere of narrow streets, small gift shops, restaurants and cafes. The Lycabettus and Filopappou, two craggy hills sitting side by side; the ancient Agora (marketplace); and Kerameikos, the first cemetery, all form the core of ancient and Roman Athens. On day 2, visit the National Archaeological Museum where vast numbers of artifacts illustrate the many centuries of Greek civilisation. Follow in the steps of Socrates and Plato and walk around the ancient Agora, the commercial hub of ancient Athens and that was once lined with statues and expensive shops. Take a walk up Lycabettus Hill, Athens’s highest hill, or jump on the funicular to the summit – on a clear day you can see Aegina Island from the top. Relax in the evening at one of the many Greek restaurants or tavernas and enjoy local dishes such as grilled ocotopus, lamb kleftiko (slow roasted with rosemary), and fresh grilled calamari, all washed down with lots of ouzo.

Summer is the high travel season in the Mediterranean. The weather is hot and sunny, the water is warm, and millions of people flock to the coast to soak up the sun and take a break from routine. During the spring months, the flowers are blooming and the landscape is verdant, while autumn days are mild and clear before the winter rains.

Those wanting to travel earlier in the season can visit some of the more southern destinations as well as the larger Mediterranean islands. Cyprus and Malta are lovely in April, with warm days and pleasant nights. Late March through April is also an ideal time to visit Morocco, Greece, Italy, Slovenia, and Turkey.
