Watch the giant ferries glide into port – it is a defining memory and an essential Helsinki experience. See the beauty of this stunning Nordic city on a sightseeing tour with live commentary from a knowledgeable guide. The city tour takes in the most interesting parts of Helsinki, such as the historical centre with Senate Square, the Presidential Palace, City Hall, the Parliament building, Finlandia Hall and the Opera House. Marvel at curvaceous and quirky metallic Kiasma – an elegant contemporary building and a symbol of the city’s modernization. Learn about traditional Finland at the Seurasaaren Ulkomuseo island museum with a collection of historic traditional houses, manors and outbuildings transferred here from around Finland. Enjoy the art nouveau architecture at Katajanokka, an island that is divided from the mainland by a narrow canal. Relax with a sauna and swim at the Yrjonkadun Uimahalli art deco baths – a fusion of soaring Nordic elegance and Roman tradition. Take your pick of bars and clubs in cool downtown Helsinki. The Arctic Ice bar is carved out of ice, including tables and bars. Depart for Kuopio, a 4-hour drive into the heart of the lakes - one third of Kuopio is water and a half is forest.
  • 3 & 4 Kuopio, attractions and sauna experience At Kuopio, science and technology blends with the natural beauty of the local environment. Surrounded by Lake Kallavesi, much of Kuopio is island terrain. Try some Kalakukko, a Finnish fish pie, at the vibrant open market place. Visit the Pajaharju Farm, a farmhouse museum in a genuine savo (native to central Finland) based courtyard area. Puljo hill is a famous landmark, 150m high, with an observation tower on its peak offering magnificent views of over the lake land scenery. The waterways of Kuopio offer a myriad of water-based activities including swimming at Vainolanniemi Beach, and sailing, wind-surfing, jet-skiing and water-skiing at Lake Kallavesi. Enjoy a spa combined with a traditional Finnish evening at the Jatkankamppa Lumberjacks Lodge – an authentic lodge from the 1950s in a scenic lake setting with the world’s biggest smoke sauna. Two of Finland’s most dynamic festivals take place in Kuopio each year, the Kuopio Dance Festival in June and the International Wine Festival in July. The festivals take over the city with music and dance events by the harbour and wine tastings at venues throughout the city.
  • 5 – 7 Rovaniemi attractions – Inaari village – reindeer farm Fly from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland. The summer in Lapland is short but the summer days are long. Take a midnight sun safari and admire breathtaking views over Lapland and its taiga forests. Listen to stores about local nature and life in the wilds while barbequing by an open fire. A moose-watching safari is a fascinating nature trip – moose are one of the largest land mammals in Europe. Learn about the Sami (Lapp) people at the Arctic Research Centre and chill out with them as they lead you to their reindeers, show you a spot of lasso-swinging, and teach you all about their handicraft and Sami cooking. One of the Rovaniemi’s architectural wonders is Lappia-Taio, the Aalto-designed concert and congress centre that houses the world’s northernmost professional theatre. The Sodankyla region – about an hour’s drive from Rovaniemi – is one of the oldest Sami settlements. The Midnight Sun Film festival draws crowds during the height of the summer. Take a reindeer sleigh ride or even pan for gold as you spend a day with the Sami people at the village of Inari, the centre forFinland’s Sami culture. Enjoy a midnight sun safari by jetski. The rivers are calm and it is one of the best ways of exploring the beautiful areas of Rovaniemi from the water. See traditional Finnish houses, summer cottages and native animals.
  • 7 & 8 Stockholm attractions and sightseeing Fly to Stockholm, Sweden’s glittering archipelago capital. Explore Stockholm, a stunning mix of old and new architecture with a vibrant city feel, surrounded by shimmering blue water and an archipelago of around 24,000 islands. Have fun squeezing through Sweden’s narrowest alleyway in the Old Town – Gamla Stan, great for shopping too. Be transported up 130 metres in a glass gondola to the top of the Ericsson Globe, the views of the city and its islands are spectacular. And marvel at the 600-room Royal Palace, sitting atop the Gamla Stan. Witness Viking history at the Vasa museum. Visit Uppsala and Sigtuna, two nearby ancient cities, full of charming wooden buildings. Take advantage of extra daylight and stay out late at one of the city’s nightclubs, they’re open until 3am.

Be amazed at the Berg locks, the canal’s biggest tourist attraction with its one flight of seven locks and another of two double locks.
  • 10 - 11 Oslo attractions and sightseeing Fly from Stockholm to Oslo and soak up the atmosphere of Oslo by exploring the city on foot and taking in the great mix of old and new architecture. There’s a new urban waterside development with cafes, bars and street performers, lush green forests nearby, and fjords that bustle with sailboats. Or explore the Oslo region by bike from the harbour to the Aker Brygge, or on Skibladner – the oldest paddle steamer in the world. The Munch Museum is a ‘scream’, and takes a leap of faith and visit the famed Holmenkollen Ski Museum and the ski jump.
  • 12 & 13 Oslo to Bergen – ‘Norway in a nutshell’ tour Take the scenic Bergen Railway from Oslo to Myrdal, ride the Flam Railway, one of the world’s steepest railway lines, with twisting tunnels spiraling in and out of the mountains. This part of the itinerary takes you through the beautiful and majestic fjord landscape, through some of Norway’s most powerful and spectacular scenery. End in the historic ‘wooden’ coastal city of Bergen, ‘gateway to the fjords’, and home to the Hanseatic Wharf at Bryggen. Scandinavia is glorious during the warm summer months – enjoy boat trips around archipelagos, cruises and hikes through the Norwegian fjords, festivals galore in Denmark, and summer lakeside cottage havens in Finland. The summer sun doesn’t set in Scandinavian Lapland so head outside for a feast of forests, lakes, rivers and outdoor fun. It’s a different place in the winter - hop on a sleigh to see the Northern Lights, ski in Lapland from February to May, meet Santa in Finland at Xmas-time, and head-off for cultural city-breaks in Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen & Helsinki all year-round.
